Martin McGarrigle

Martin is an environmental specialist with wide-ranging experience, especially in the area of aquatic ecology. He’s been involved with biological monitoring of Irish rivers for over 30 years and has clocked up over 10,000 individual assessments based on the Q-Value scoring system for macroinvertebrates.

With Ken Whelan (, he is currently running a series of increasingly popular water craft training programmes for volunteer groups and communities across Ireland. A keen angler, Martin has an intimate knowledge of the bugs and beasties that feed trout, char and juvenile salmon in our rivers, streams and loughs. An afternoon in Martin’s company will provide you with all sorts of new ideas on how best to imitate the various life stages of insects and other invertebrates that dominate the food of trout.  We are thrilled that Martin has agreed to join us for the Irish Spring Angling Fair!  Martin will be based at our dedicated entomology station at the Fair and will also be giving a talk in the lecture theatre.
